Day 3: Luxembourg
Well I started off my day leaving room 213, my home while i was in Brussels, and now I am currently chilling out in room 204 in Luxembourg city hostel (I like this travelling malarkey).
Once again I had I was up very early this morning, but this time it was so I could get to the train station on time to catch my first train. Getting a train in a foreign country is actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, everyone is really helpful and all the platforms are easy to find. Apart from the excitement of it being my first train journey of the trip, it was quite uneventful. I got my ticket checked by the conductor (which was probably the part I was most worried about, I half expected him to tell me it was invalid and I had to get off) and just sat reading for most of the journey. When I finally got to Luxembourg it was pouring with rain (luckily living in Manchester for the last 2 year has prepared me for this and I made sure I packed my umbrella before I left). I checked with the international travel desk about getting the train to Berlin tomorrow, and after giving me the times of the trains available the man pointed me in the direction of the bus that would take me to my hostel. The bus ride was really quick and the driver told me when to get off and where to go when he stopped (though at one point I thought he had dropped me in the middle of nowhere). Eventually I found the hostel and checked in. This hostel is a lot more modern and family orientated than the one in Brussels. I'm in a six person room this time (instead of a four) though there is currently only one other person in the room, who is out at the moment so I don't know what they are like.
After I'd gotten myself sorted I went down to reception and picked up a map of the city along with some tips about where to go. I made my way into town, firstly looking for a restaurant because it was past lunchtime now and I was starving. As I was waking about 50 cyclists passed me (I found out a few minutes ago that today is luxembourg's equivalent to the Tour de France). I found a cute little bistro opposite the palace and had some traditional Luxembourg sausages and mustard mashed potatoes (really nice) with a glass of local white wine (I'm probably going to come back after this trip an alcoholic). After lunch I wondered round the city (it had stopped raining by now) taking pictures of the palace, statues, streets, cathedrals, and fountains. Luxembourg is a really pretty city, very traditional "European" style architecture. After a while I took a break and had a hot chocolate (the type with the chocolate on a spoon that you stir into hot milk) and a slice of cheesecake in this really nice chocolatier cafe. I then made my way to the city's catacombs (or casemate bock as it is called here) and proceeded to get lost in all the tunnels. Finally I found my way back out again and headed back to the hostel for some much needed rest.
So there you have my day in Luxembourg, a really pretty traditional city. Tomorrow it's onto Berlin for something completely different.
Watch this space.
