Day 8: Bratislava.
Today's entry will be short and sweet, like my stay in Bratislava.
Today I got the latest train of my trip so far and left Prague at 9:42am. The train journey was quite standard and took just over 4 hours. Though the last few minutes coming into Bratislava were a bit worrying due to the fact that the train went at such a slow pace I thought it was going to stop at a random station and I would be left stranded in the outskirts of the city. Finally though the train pulled in to Bratislava's main train station (which is a lot less modern to the stations I have grown accustomed to on this this trip). When i finally made it through the crowd of people waiting on the platform I made my way out of the station and to the old part of town to find my hostel. The Downtown Backpackers hostel is right in the heart of all the tourist spots in Bratislava, which is really handy since I have less than a day here. After a quick check in, and my usual queery about good local restaurants, I headed down into town. On the advice of the hostel receptionist I found a little beer garden restaurant and ordered myself a plate of goats cheese gnocchi (something completely different to the food I have eaten so far). After filling up with the local quisine it was time to see the city (in record time).
I started by making my way up to Bratislava castle. The castle is a lot more simplistic and small compared to the one in Prague. Though the views of the city from up on the hill are still just as nice. After taking in the views (and stopping a really nice Spanish girl for a mini photo shoot) I headed back down into the town centre. Probably the most famous building in Bratislava, apart from the castle, is the blue church (which I saw a mini version of in Mini Europe). Its quite a sight when you turn the corner onto its street (it almost looks like it should be in Balamory). With photos taken, I wondered round the streets of the Old Town. Bratislava is very similar to Prague (not surprising considering the two cities used to be in the same country) though it is much smaller, you could probably walk from on end to the other in about 20 minutes. After walking round for a while, taking picture after picture and seeing pretty much all ther is to see in the city, I decided to head back to the hostel for the night.
So there you have my very brief stay in Bratislava, an understated city that is definitely worth a visit (even if for only a day).
Tomorrow its on to Vienna. Watch this space.
