Day 135- Today we were heading to Hot Water Beach, a beach which has pockets of thermally heated water where you dig a hole in the sand and sit in the hot pools. Low tide was at 8.30 am and to ensure you dig at the right spot you have to be there 2 hours either side so we had to get there fast, It was an hour and a half drive to Hot Water Beach so we checked out at 8am and we were on the road. We managed to make in there in an hour so had plenty of time, we hired a spade and started to dig. The beach was busy and we thought you had to keep digging deep to get the hot water so we dug for ages. After a while a man told us the heat is in pockets and you don't need to dig so far down. With the tide coming in fast we decided to jump in the hot pools other people had already dug. What a surprise, the water was boiling hot, we couldn't believe it. We sat in the pool until the tide began to take it away. It was a really great morning. Once cleaned up we got back on the road, we stopped off in a little village called Whangamata, we pulled up next to the beach and ate our tuna fish sandwiches we had made that morning, it was lovely weather but we had to get back on the road. We drove a while more and soon we were at Karangahake Gorge, a lovely place where a gold mine once was. We did a walk through the gorge which was beautiful, it took us through some pitch black gold mining tunnels cut in to the cliff, good job we brought along the piggy torch. It was a really fun and interesting walk, well worth stopping off for. After a long day we did our final drive to Tauranga, we made some tea and had an early night.
