Heylo
Today we wandered around the old town for a bit. We went to the basilica santa catalina which included a museum with loads of really gruesome religious art, e.g. sheep lapping up Jesus´s blood. It was all a bit disturbing, there was a creepy bed for no reason but conveniently a box of medicine that reminded us to take our malaria pills.. and has now reminded us again. The woman working at the museum showed us out a curtain into a garden which is tended to by the nuns. The nuns are kept locked away and are only allowed one hour a day to talk to eachother. We got to try some of the non-alcoholic wine they make, it wasn´t too bad.
The nuns are able to sell stuff from behind a revolving door that keeps them hidden, so of course we felt the need to buy something. We bought two candles and a moisturiser, and it was funny because the first time Matthew asked the nun for those items there was no one behind the door. He was speaking to himself. He then ended up seeing the nun and now thinks she is going to hell.
We wanted to go into a few more of the churches but there are weird opening times so just saw them from the outside. The best idea of the day was to go to the supermarket and buy a load of stuff to make a big meal. Our room had a kitchen thing attached so we made pasta and loads of vegetables like asparagus and courgettes. Doesn´t sound too exciting but we´ve been living off weird salads with horrible cucumber in them.
That evening we went to the Ecuadorian folkloric ballet. This was brilliant. It was in the national museum in a small theatre and there were dancers greeting you as you went in at the top of every flight of stairs/corner. The ballet went on for a few hours and included 90 dancers and hundreds and hundreds of different costumes from different indigenous cultures. There was a guy playing a 10 string ukelele thing who was really going for it, have a video.
We took the trole to and from the ballet and the ticket guy even told us to be very careful with our bags and money, then said ´you´ll be fine´ in a supposedly reasurring way. We ate strawberries when we got home which made Lisa feel ill for days after.
