Hello! In Santa Cruz, the main island in the Gapapagos. It´s really humid here, like being in the Palm house in botanic gardens. We arrived in the afternoon after a rather dodgy flight which included bacon muffins..how disapointing. We got a bus from the airport in Baltra to a little canal boat where they throw your bags on top of the roof while it crosses over a choppy stretch of water. We´d watched other boats and people´s bags hanging half off so were a bit nervous.
In the morning we met a guide from Ordex who took us to a farm where we saw our first few tortoise. The first one we saw was bathing in a pool and looked like a massive rock. It´s like spot the not a rock competition. We then went through this massive lava tunnel, about 300metres in near dark without the guide. At points the ceiling of the tunnel got really low and we had to climb through on hands and knees. After this we went and checked into the hostel and then left for the Darwin Research centre. This has a giant tortoise breeding ground so we were able to walk through and take loads of photos. Some american girl was asking a south american guide if there were rats in the ocean when we were there, gave us a laugh. We learned a lot about the tortoise, like that their age is calculated like that of a tree by counting the rings on the patches on their shells. We saw some tortoise that were over 100 years old. We also found out that the Galapagos islands were named after the saddle shaped shell of one variety of tortoise, in spanish translated to galapagos.
We´re heading back to the hostel now. Matthew´s had two showers so far today and plans to have another. There´s massive insects here so not a bad idea. There´s coconut trees, loads of pelicans, sea iguanas, small lizards and big spiders. We are goig to head out later to a little bar near our hostal.
We´ve heading to isabella tomorrow, miss yous
Lisa and Matthew xo
