Salvador is the capital of Bahia and we ended up staying in the German consulate building. Rather surreal really as each room was named after a famous German. We were lucky enough to be in the Martin Luther room (it took us some time to realise they werent talking about that famous German Martin Luther King - doh!); so Mum you dont have to worry we were in the most puritanical place a mother could hope for. For those of you who miss juris the other girls next door were lucky enough to stay in Kant´s room. Unfortunate that the Swiss girl´s pronunciation of this name could have been taken as a rather less intellectual form of communication.
Our evenings in Salvador consisted of drinking a lot cans of the local beer - skol, in the street with the locals, who welcomed us with varying degrees of friendliness! We cruelly allowed Ruben, the only guy in our group to be taken by a rather butch looking geezer to dance a bit of samba! It was hilarious to watch an English guy attempt to dance anyway, let alone one dance samba with a butch homosexual!
The best thing about Salvador is that every night men with drums fill the streets. The noise they create reverberates through your whole body and you can´t help but just move your feet. You can see all the local women really getting into it. They samba to the beat like they are about to explode. The faster they move, the more the men seem to be spurred on and they just drum even faster and louder.
On our final evening in Salvador we watched a phenomenal capoiera performance. Capoiera is a cross between martial arts, acrobatics and dance. Done well it makes Bruce Lee look lazy! The way they can twist and turn their bodies, almost fly through the air with triple somersaults is just amazing. We were sitting so close to the stage that we received first hand evidence of their perspiration! Ordinarily, i would not place this as a plus point but (my lovely ladies back home) i have to let you know that the capoiera men were without doubt the hottest men on this planet!
Im in Praia de Pipa at the moment, leaving tonight to go to Jerichocoa so I will let you know how i get on!
