This weekend was fun, I only had a three day week because it´s a holiday, oh yay. We (that is, the usual suspects) went to Riobamba, which is an old stretch of track that goes through the mountains and it was a really clear, hot day so we saw about 4 different volcanos. They´re beautiful. The views of the countryside, mountains and farms are stunning and you have to sit on the roof. All the kids from the villages wave at the train and beg for sweeties. It was pretty scary at one point because one carriage derailed! Luckily noone was hurt and we weren´t going very fast or where very hight up... there are some steep drops at some points! and after an hour we were on our way again. I think it was routine! The $1 cushion rent was definatly worth it!
Today we went to Latacunga for a festival, very traditional with music, a big parade for Mama Negra, a blacked-up guy on a horse representing the political emancipation of the city that coincided with the freeing of the slaves, costumes, dancing and trannies (an Ecuadorian tradition, they sell sweets and whip you) and got very sunburnt! Lots of fun until the inevitable happened after very hot day and lots of beer had been consumed and a fight broke out where people were hurling beer bottles and we had to take cover.
Haha its November and you´re all freezing your asses off and I am nursing sunburn!
So kinda sick of public transport now, after 4 hours to Riobamba with a bad bad hangover (margheritas, bad), traffic and bumpy roads (I spent most of the time with head between knees, a good look ), getting up at 5am to get on the train for 7 hours, getting straight off train to a bus to Riobamba (2 hours), to Latacunga (2 hours) and then today back to Quito (3 hours). So back home now, snug as a bug. Yay! Chill out day tomorrow I think. No more sitting down!
Jungle all booked so just got to get on the bus and go! Yay piranahs, pink dolphins, trekking and sleeping in hammocks and best of all, no Germans! No offence, but CENIT is 50% German and I understand maybe one word in 10. So horray for the Brits. Funny thing is here have got even more English, have lost Liverpool accent and am back to speaking like a toff just like my mummy taught me. Rah.
Love,
Nadia xx
