After possibly the worst and longest bus journey we've ever done we arrived in Nasca. Having said that, for us the journey was ok. We splashed out on first class seats and took plenty of tablets for the windy roads. We travelled throughout the night so whilst we were quietly sleeping everyone else was being sick, nice!
We got to Nasca at 7.45am, checked into our hotel and went to bed. We were rudely awaken by a knock on the door, the'd brought us our breakfast - popcorn.
The weather is great here, it only rains 40hours a year (knowing our luck it will probably rain this afternoon). It's nice to be somewhere hot after spending weeks on the altiplano with freezing temperatures. Aidan even bought some new flipflops and we are both in the summer mood.
Yesterday afternoon we visited Chauchilla Cemetry in the middle of the desert. Lots of mummies, almost 1000 years old, perfectly preserved in their tombs. I was most impressed by the length of the ladies hair. Have a look at the pictures they are pretty gory.
Everyone comes to Nasca to see the Nasca lines. No one knows why they are there. We even went to a lecture and are none the wiser. There are lots of interesting shapes in the desert: monkey, dog, humming bird, parrot, condor and spider.
So this morning we were up early for our flight over the Nasca lines. I almost chickened out when I saw the size of our plane, it was tiny! How could that thing possibly fly? Aidan and I squashed in the back, the pilot and another tourist in the front. Heard lots of stories about people being sick so had my sick bag at the ready. Luckily we were both ok. So both sides of the plane could see the lines the pilot did some acrobatics - was like a rollercoaster ride.
Tomorrow we are going to Huacachini, a desert oasis. Heard its a great place to chill for a few days.
Oh yeah, we also saw the world's highest sand dune -Cerro blanco 2070m. We were suitably impressed.
The pilot jumped at the chance to be in our photo.
Katie.
