Machu Picchu obviously didn't have the same effect on Aidan as it had on Steven. There was no marriage proposal.
But still it was an exciting and interesting day. We got the train to Machu Picchu in the Backpacker Express. The main difference between this class and the other is that there is no heating. Was so cold on the train because it was 6am and still below zero degrees. Anyway the scenery was amazing, lots of snowy peaks!
Got to the station and had to get a bus to Machu Picchu. Thanks to the jeep crash I was a nervous wreck as the bus crawled up the side of a steep mountain. I was glad to be on my feet again.
We hired a guide to take us around Machu Picchu. She was excellent and explained everything. We are Inca experts now.
The most fascinating thing for me about Machu Picchu is just how high up in the mountains the city is. The scenery around was great. For Aidan the most fascinating thing were the llamas. They were everywhere. We have more photos of llamas than we have of the ruins. This photo is funny with the llama in the background. Aidan's wanted a shot like this ever since we got to South America.
We had lunch (see photos) which we brought ourselves to save money. Felt a bit silly eating on the wall whilst the rich tourists dined in style. After lunch we climbed to the top for a view, which was breathtaking. Mostly because we are still unfit at altitude.
Machu Picchu would be incomplete without its American tourists feeling its `energy`, I even heard one commenting on the Yen.
On the train back we travelled at a whopping 15mph. Apparently there was grease on the tracks so had to go at snails pace. Took 6 hours! Shared some beers on the train with some fellow Brits who thanked us at the end of the journey for keeping them entertained! They found our picnic dinner hilarious.
Katie.
