We've had a very busy but enjoyable first day in New York.
First off, we headed to the southern tip of Manhattan on the subway, and walked round Battery Park, taking in the view of the Statue of Liberty. We hadn't intended to go out to the Statue anyway, but seeing the 4000 mile long queue for the ferry decided it for us. After that we took a walk up through the financial district, stopping for some pancakes for breakfast before exploring the concrete canyons of Wall Street and the surrounding areas.
Next we headed up to the South Street Seaport for some views of the Brooklyn Bridge and a wander round Pier 17. We managed to get some half price tickets to Sister Act on Broadway at the TKTS booth down there, so that was our evening sorted.
From the Seaport we wandered up past City Hall then through Chinatown, stopping for some amazingly cheap and excellent food, then through Little Italy, Soho, and Greenwich Village, just soaking in the atmosphere and checking out all the cool buildings. A bar near NYU with $1 beers and free popcorn provided a welcome stop for a couple of hours after all the walking, before we caught the subway back uptown.
Walking out of the subway and being surrounded by massive skyscrapers was incredible. After a quick look around the Rockefeller Centre we made our way over to Broadway just as it was starting to get dark, and grabbed a slice of pizza before heading to the theatre. Sister Act was great but unfortunately I kept nodding off during the 2nd Act and had to be constantly pinched and prodded by Lucy to keep my eyes open. More to do with all the walking we'd done than the show, which was excellent!
Once we got out of the theatre, we'd intended to head straight home to bed but the lure of seeing Times Square lit up at night saw us walking the few blocks south to take in that incredible assault on the senses. I think I'll be seeing glowing corporate logos every time I shut my eyes for the next few days, but it had to be seen!
A quick ride on the subway saw us back at Kevin's apartment where I'm writing this. Off to sleep now, but there will hopefully be more to report on tomorrow!
