Day 17
We wernt too sure what to do after having to check out of hostel at 10. Were both pretty hungover again and could either stay another night in Queenstown or head to Dunedin for the night before making our way up to Christchurch for the weekend.
We opted for a bit of hitching again and initially a dreadlocked Georgian took us from Queenstown to the main road a few kms down the road. From here we were taken to a small town Cromwell on route, but it was only 40mins drive and in the middle of nowhere. There was no accommodation around and it was approaching 5pm, so we were getting a bit worried and decided to cross over the road, write a new sign and get back to Queenstown. After another 30mins with v.few passing cars a lady from the small fruit stall nearby offered to take us to a busier junction if we wanted to continue towards Dunedin. It was worth a crack and it actually worked because within 10mins a builder offered to drive us 1hr in the right direction on his way back from work.
Our final lift again came within 10mins and a bloke in a swish 4x4 drove us in comfort all the way to the centre of Dunedin! He was telling us how he was a pharmacist and being a traveler in his youth he took pity on us. Apparently he was selling his business for $2million that evening and was awaiting a phone call to confirm it. He looked the part and his story seemed realistic so I reken he was telling the truth. The situations we find ourselves in J
We got to Dunedin at 8.30 and straight away we saw a message asking if anyone wants to share petrol for a lift up to Christchurch (where we were heading to). We foned up the bird and I even cheekily managed to negotiate that she left at 10ish, a bit later than the 8am she originally asked!
So we had just one night to do something, and decided to go to a few bars. It was pretty good and managed to stumble into the uni area and Dunedin has a reputation for being a real rowdy one like Leeds back home I guess.
It was pretty crazy and the youngsters here definitely cant handle it as well as we could back in those days…..sick everywhere and some well weird dress sense (maybe there was a strange theme, we’re not sure).
