Well done to Steve Glen and Steve Smith who successfully completed their Coastal Skipper & Day Skipper qualifications in early February with us out in the Algarve.
Wednesday saw the weather at it's best with us able to make full use of the Portimao river, anchoring under power and under sail, sailing to a buoy and successfully picking it up, even when the tide turned.
Then pilotage to Lagos and a splendid pasta lunch alongside the reception pontoon. Onto Alvor and anchor practice and echo sounder observation tests, so it was only a little sand bank!
The week had everything you could ask of the weather with the highlight being on the thursday night sail from Alvor to Albufeira when the "mother of all thunderstorms" came up from the west and we sought refuge in Portimao marina with forked lightning coming down all around, rain falling like stair rods too. We just got alongside in Portimao when the worst hit - fastest tie up ever!
Next day we were able to do a simulated navigation in reduced visibility and followed the 10 metre contour to perfection despite the sound of some pretty fearsome surf which sounded very close to hand.
The next day the weather returned to normal and we were able to complete the course in a superb force 6 (Yachtsmans gale maybe). Which made man overboard recovery under power and sail a very realistic exercise, well done Steve and Steve.
All in all a brilliant week where everyone onboard learnt lots. Great stuff.
