Having left Auckland behind we joined the Magic bus and made our way down to Rotorua via Waitomo where we were able to go black water rafting which isn't really rafting at all but just sitting in a black rubber ring floating through the caves looking at all the pretty glow worms. It was well woth doing despite the really cold water and EElS!!!!!! Luckily we did not see any whilst we were down there but I swear something touched my bum at one point and it wasn't a rock and Katherine was in front of me.
Also on the bus journey we went to see a rabbit get shaved the poor thing looked so scared, an v.odd thing to watch.
After enjoying the lovely tomato soup we were given after the black water rafting we got back on the bus to Rotorua. Once we arrived we had 20 minutes to get ready before we were being picked up to go and watch one of the cultural performances that one of the local tribes put on for tourists and enjoy a Hangi feast. The show was really good and we learnt a lot about Maori culture and the all you can eat Hangi was so nice, I had seconds of everything including pudding (there's a shock!). With a full belly we headed back to the hostel to get a good nights sleep ready for our second extreme activity, white water rafting down the highest commerically rafted waterfall in the world (7m)!!!
Despite nearly not reaching the rafting HQ due to a random police cheack on the van we were in which turned out not to be road worthy due to poor brakes and a back door that didn't shut properly. When we eventually got there we met our instructure, who was quite hot in a weird sort of way, we think it was the sunglasses. It was so much fun and not as scary as I had thought although when we went over the 7 m waterfall I got so much water up my nose it was well worth it.
