After a tearful goodbye we left Emma and Bekkie and headed over to Kiakoura where we had arranged to stay at a hostel that belonged to one of the Magic Bus drivers, Uncle Steve (as we now call him). It's only a small place but we had a room to ourselves, a tv in our room and we got mates rates!!! We stayed a week and had so much fun, the day we arrived Uncle Steve took us out to this really nice Irish bar that's out in the country and then made us a roast dinner! The fun continued the day after when Uncle Steve took us to this petting farm which so much fun! we were allowed to feed the animals, ride the horse and everything. There was this really cute little pig that rolled over when you rubbed it's belly and this lima that spat in one of the other girls that was staying at the hostels face, it was so funny! We spent nearly three hours that and it only cost $5, bargain!
Didn't really do much for the next couple of days as the sea was really rough so we couldn't go whale watching etc. By Tuesday we were worried that our time was running out so decided to go whale watching but instead of going on the boat where 8 out of 10 people were being sick we went in a helicopter! Budget what budget?! We saw two sperm whales, one of which I spotted, and got to see the coast line and seals. The flight was only 30 minutes but well worth it. That evening we ventured on into town to check out the night life, Uncle Steve was meeting a few of his driver friends so he said it should be a good night, and it was. Everyone is so friendly in NZ, Katherine and I were having a game of pool (which seemed to last FOREVER) when the guys on the next table asked if we'd like to play doubles and the winner gets a crayfish (don't know where we were going to get a crayfish but we didn't tell them that). We actually won the game which came as a shock to us both but never got to see the crayfish. As the night progressed the days spent at the West Midlands Safari Park luring the graffes away from the small children payed off for Katherine, he he he he.
The next day we didn't get up to much but Uncle Steve cooked us a roast lamb dinner which was really nice and one of the other drivers came round for tea and we all watched the Castle, which is really funny (like the Australian version of the Royle Family). It was an early night for us as we had booked to go swimminh with dolphins at 5.30am! its the best time to go as the dolphins have just come in from feeding so they are very active. The water was really cold but we saw so many and had lots of interaction, swimming in circles with them and diving down, it was really amazing and the sea was really calm. Well woth doing if you ever find yourself in Kiakoura.
Whilst we were there we also went swimming with seals, which wasn't as good as the dolphins as I only saw one and lots of seaweed but at least I saw one swimming the rest were all sitting on rocks as a storm was coming in. To make up for the lack of seal action we treated ourselves to fish and chips as we were by the sea which was really good. Kiakoura has to be one of the highlights of NZ, we had a really good time so thank you Uncle Steve!
