Arrived in the Galapagos today after a thoroughly enjoyable 15 hour flight from London to Madrid to Guayaquil (3 hour stopover) to Quito, 5 hours sleep then another fight from Quito to Guayaquil to Baltra in the morning. Pre arranged airport transfers make me happy.
Wheels broke on the suitcase which also pleased me greatly, but finally got to the boat, Estrella Del Mar. Our qualified National Park guide is Enrique.
Visited Santa Cruz island and got a bus to the Charles Darwin research centre. Walked around the sanctuary to see giant Land Tortoises, including Lonesome George, who is not so lonely now as he has 2 females for company.
They live for up to 200 years and are very very slow, doing title but lounge around. There is a massively successful breeding program run here, where they are released back into the wild after 5 years, although only 35% survive after release, numbers are steadily rising again.
Had a look around Puerto Ayora and bought a wooden Tortoise carving, hopefully we can get it all the way back. Was a fish Market here where fisherman would bring their fresh catches and sell them. Lobster and some massive fish were a smorgasbord for the plethora of Pelicans who tried to sneak a cheeky sample.
Food is good on board, freshly prepared by the chef.
