On Thursday morning we set off for Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon. After just 8 miles along the road we stopped off at Exeter a small picturesque town with murals painted on shop walls and back streets, a lovely little place. From here we made our way towards Sequoia and Kings Canyon. After about an hour we reached the entrance and began our drive through the impressive valley climbing to around 6000 feet. The area is dominated by huge Redwoods and Giant Sequoias and we stopped off at General Sherman the world’s largest tree in terms of volume and General Grant the largest tree in the world in circumference. At General Sherman we were also lucky enough to see a Black Bear which was an added bonus. We also spotted a snake and lots of cute squirrels and chipmunks.
From Sequoia we drove through Kings Canyon and onto Merced where we planned to stay the night. A little lost Laura decided to ask for directions from a police officer who very kindly took us to the motel and we arrived via an escort! The next morning we headed for Yosemite and on the way had another encounter with the law however this time it was not so friendly. Anyway with a speeding ticket in hand we proceeded (with caution) onto Yosemite!
It didn’t disappoint. Stunning rivers, meadows and gigantic rock formations make the park a spectacular sight. We drove through the glacier carved valley stopping of at several points of interest including El Capitan and Half Dome two massive granite monoliths. For lunch we stopped at Yosemite Village and then walked a trail alongside the river hoping for some more bears but without much luck. We left the park and drove onto Manteca on the way to San Francisco where we plan to spend the weekend.
