Arrived in San Francisco on Saturday morning and found a hotel to stay at in Oakland just across the bay from downtown San Francisco. We had a walk around the waterfront at Oakland before getting the Bart (or subway) to San Francisco. Once in the city we went to Pier 39 and saw the sea-lions before having a coffee, we then wandered towards the centre of town passing through Chinatown before reaching Union Square where we went to the top of Macy’s for views over the city. In the evening we went for an Indian before bed in the hotel that unfortunately had an industrial train track right outside so sleep wasn’t exactly uninterrupted.
On Sunday morning we again took the BART across to the city and booked in for a tour of Alcatraz before getting the bus out to Golden Gate Bridge and checking out Lombard Street which claims to be the “Crookedest Street in the World”. We returned just in time for the ferry over to Alcatraz and spent the next few hours wandering around the old prison guided using an audio tour which was excellent. We returned as the sun was setting over Golden Gate Bridge and then walked to Chinatown for food before heading back to the hotel.
We are now planning to head down the coast to L.A stopping off as we go, the next stop will probably be Santa Cruz.
