Ok so to update you all we left Monterey last Wednesday! From Monterey we continued our journey down the west coast on Highway 1 looking out over the Pacific Ocean. The roads were pretty spectacular as we drove a 125-mile stretch of highway known as the Big Sur, a region that boasts "craggy, unspoiled coastline adorned with mother nature's palette" (Lonely Planet, 2009). Along the way we stopped off at various points to enjoy the "vistas"!
On Wednesday evening we stopped off at Piedras Blancas where we viewed Elephant Seals at close quarters as the sun set. From there we continued onto Morro Bay where we spent the night in a very flowery and friendly motel. In the morning we drove around the bay and got close to six sea otters that were chilling out on the water. From there we journeyed on towards Santa Barbara, a trendy university town with a Mediterranean vibe. We arrived mid afternoon and had a stroll along the pier and beach shared with lots of pelicans before grabbing some food in the town at a nice Indian restaurant.
On Friday we moved down the coast and stopped off at Santa Claus beach where we saw a pod of dolphins hunting in the shallows. We stopped for lunch in a small town, Carpinteria and then decided to head towards Malibu where we walked along the beach watching the surfers. We made it to Malibu Lagoon an area that offered a veritable smorgasbord of ornithological delights! (This is Stani writing this by the way)!
From Malibu we decided to spend the evening at Laguna and Newport Beach (The Orange County!), however on arrival it soon became apparent that the area was well out of our price range so we drove, in the dark, to San Clemente a cheaper version where we stopped in an Africa themed motel room (Nice!). In the morning we relaxed on San Clemente beach before setting off for Cardiff-by-the-Sea!!!
The Lonely Planet states that Cardiff-by-the-Sea is known for its "surfing and laid back crowds" so, just like Wales then! After a wander around and obligatory comedy photos by a selection of Cardiff signs we checked out the surrounding surfing towns of Solana Beach and Encinitas.
