Howdy!
We awoke early on Tuesday morning at about 5.30 to go and watch the sunrise from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. It was a pretty spectacular sight although it was quite chilly and far too early! After the sunrise we walked along the south rim stopping off at various viewing points for photos. It is really impressive and to get some idea of its size, it is around 10 miles across to the north rim and around a mile deep!
From the canyon we drove back into Nevada, towards Las Vegas heading for Death Valley National Park. It was a long drive and at sunset we stopped off at Red Rock Canyon a mountainous valley where the rocks go through different shades of red as the day passes. From the canyon we headed (in the dark) to Pahrump (Brilliant!!). We stayed at the Nugget Casino and Hotel which sounds dodgy but was really quite nice!
The next morning we began our journey from Nevada into California and Death Valley National Park (a Geography teachers dream!). Driving through the valley we stopped at several points of interest including Badwater Basin, the lowest point below sea level in the Western Hemisphere (282 feet or 85.5m if you’re asking) and Mesquite Sand Dunes. The valley is vast, barren and in some parts looks like the surface of the moon. From the valley we set out for Lake Isabella and again passed through huge mountain ranges and plains. After another long drive we made it to Lindsay where we settled for the night just 8 miles from Exeter!!! From Lindsay the plan is to get to National Park number three Sequoia and Kings Canyon.
Have a nice day y’all!
