We finally got a nice day in Bruges! It only rained for about 10 minutes through the afternoon, but other than that, it was clear all day.
We took full advantage and hired bikes for the day.
First we went into the town centre and went into the Crown Plaza, where in the basement there is a church from the 14th century that was dug up when Crown Plaza first started being built, after much deliberation, the council told Crown Plaza they were not aloud to destroy the church, but they could build over it, and that’s what they did. So you walk in to Crown Plaza, ask reception to see the basement and they point you in the right direction.
We then went and had coffee in the town centre called the Markt and after coffee we had Belgium waffles with chocolate sauce and ice cream Mmm Yummy…
From there we went to the church of Our Lady which holds Michelangelo’s Madonna and child, there were also many other religious paintings and sculptures ones of which was carved out of a 400 year old oak tree.
Once we left there we went to Bruges De halve Mann brewery and done a brewery tour, they showed us how they used to brew beers and the difference in types of beers and at the end we got to try their double fermented blonde beer.
After the brewery tour we went to the town outskirts where the Traitors Scull hangs from a bridge. It is a bronze replica of a guy’s scull from 1688 that betrayed his town by opening the bridge gates to the enemy so they chopped his head off.
Afterwards we headed to t brugs beertje, a pub with 250 types of beer, we tried the Trappist beer (which is made by monks within the Abbey in which they live) and Mustard beer, which sounds really strange, but was in actual fact, very tasty!
