Just a quick one today.
Getting into the teaching properly now and it's keeping both Louise and I very busy. My first class after being ill (now all recovered!) was 2 hours long although I had been told itwas 1 hour. Unfortunately this meant that I had to improvise for an hour with a classroom of sixty 13 year olds which wasn't exactly the smoothest introduction to teaching. However, it all seems to be improving and we're currently shadowing teachers at the lycee as well before taking over their classes, the English clubs and helping in the library.
Last weekend we walked to the beach nearby with a colleague's daughter, Oumou, and her cousins and sisters and learnt a bit of Senegalese dancing. I don't think we have quite enough style but what can you do?! We also tried to teach them a little of the highland fling but somehow it didn't seem quite so cool! We also went to the church on Fadiouth last Sunday which was really interesting although it was segregated and we didn't realise... oops! I couldn't understand any of the Wolof really but the singing was nice and there was a lot of bowing and a bird or two which flew into people but it was definitely worth going.
Most other things are just going on as normal. Louise found a dead mouse stuck to our curtain and last night our fishcakes for the family went horrendously wrong. We've learnt to make bissap juice (with a little too much sugar...) and Louise is perfecting her ataya. Lately we've had an awful lot of visitors dropping by to have a chat which tends to last the whole afternoon so you can never really plan your day. It's lovely that so many people are coming round and we now know so many people but it's a challenge sometimes when 6 people turn up with no warning and you have to spend the rest of the afternoon and evening entertaining before finishing any work before bed.
Anyway I'm off to photocopy some worksheets... I'm starting to sound like such a teacher... I wonder why!
Hope all is well and wintry back home, it's nothing of the sort over here. Make sure to enjoy the cold!
