Just a quick note from Joal as I'm in the Junior High computer suite and I've only got a few minutes.
Finally arrived here on Thursday after having to spend an extra week in Kaolack but it was definitely worth the wait. We spent a lot of time with the family in Kaolack, took a trip to the back at Saly and even managed to experience a little bit of Senegalese nightlife before coming... just a little different to back in Britain! For a start we didn't leave the house until 2am and then the club closed at 5.30am so you can imainge I was a little tired!
Joal itself is beautiful. We went to the port the other day when the sun was setting and all the fishermen were returning to the shore. The beach was heaving with pirogues, horse and carts, people and fish. Tonnes and tonnes of fish. There are a lot of fishermen who come here for only months at a time from Guinea and Guinea Bissau to work and send money home so but they spend day after day fishing and then running with crates of fish on their heads from the sea to the lorries whilst children catch the falling fish and sell them for school stationary. Yesterday Louise and I walked north out of Joal and into the ''forest.'' By forest it is just a massive flat plateau of trees dotted across it every so often and a lot of cattle and goats. It was the first time really getting out of the city or town though and was really very impressive.
Today we are visiting all the schools we will be working at although some are flooded so it's a little difficult. Our host here, Amadou, is introducing us to everyone and we are still trying to sort out accommodation as there's been quite a lot of confusion with it. We are currently staying with him, his wife and two children, who are all very welcoming, especially the 2 year old girl! The cooking is so nice and there it is cooler here in general so there are less mosquitos too. What could be better?!
Anyway time is up and we need to go and make a good impression before getting stuck into work. Please keep any emails or letters coming, it's so nice to receive any news of back home! Hope you are all well and taking care,
Love Kirsty x
