So we reached Playa and STRUGGLED to find where they were staying. Take heaps of one way streets, a GPS who doesn't know what its doing, not great directions, and two people who were very tired… we had FUN getting there haha. We ended up luckily running into Kaye and Stu on the street after we had found a park and they guided us to the hotel.
Hotel was basic but had aircon which was what we wanted really! We unpacked and headed straight to the beach for a welcome drink of strawberry daiquiris awoo! We found a place where you sit on swings on the beach! We quickly discovered though that the food and drink here would be more expensive than what it was like through the centre of Mexico… more tourists, and unfortunately and sadly for us most people spoke English to us L just when we were getting used to speaking Spanish to everyone! I loved that part of the holiday and my experience and was sad to realise that this was really the end of that part.
So after a few drinks we headed to a place K and Stu had found with yum yum cheap seafood and cheap beers. We had a few tequila shots and were amazed at how NICE it is there! I always thought it wasn't and wished that we had the same stuff in Australia instead of the stuff there which tastes like petrol!
Then we headed for a walk through town and found a tourist shop which offered free tequila shots to everyone who walked in… SWEET! So we played in there for a while. We went for a cruise then and found a place with two for one drinks (a rip though cos they were just half the size haha) and found a cool band to watch for a while. Then we thought oxxo esky… some beers and the beach! And went down there. Matt found a local to hang out with for the night… hilarious cos Matt's Spanish wasn't great and this guy's English was nonexistent.. adding to this that they were both enormously pissed was funny to watch! Annoyingly he hung out with us ALL night and wouldn't leave us alone… probably due to the fact that Matt kept buying him drinks all night haha. Those two had a ball although I did think he was trying to take Matt from me after he followed him into the water for a swim haha. A dance and a fire twiling show later we were all stuffed and headed back to our awesome air conditioned rooms! Great day and night and so so great to think I was catching up with Kaye on the other side of the world! Nothing at all seemed to have changed though which was great - apart from the fact that her accent had changed slightly to have a twinge of Canadian in it. Funny!
The next day Stu got up early to go scuba diving while us three decided to use the car again and go to Tulum which K had been to but hadn't seen the town in. Me and Matt ate breaky at some place in town which I could barely stand it was so hot I would have been happy not eating and just sitting in our hotel room! So we headed to Tulum and after a drama at trying to find the 'Playa' (beach) we managed to find the hotel strip along the beach. We stopped at one which looked good although realised many weren't serving food - shattering. The place was so incredibly beautiful though, the beach wasn't littered with people or hotels like it is in Playa Del Carmen and the water was gorgeous. Matt went for a swim, then we went for a walk and stumbled upon a place which looked they would at least do some drinks. We hit gold with this one. Not only did they do food they hand made everything including bread, fettuchini etc. I had a cocktail and the other two had drinks too, we ordered a fish and pasta with lobster in it! It was amazing… and of course came with the customary entres… although this time they were olives and little brushettas and stuff. The food was amazing and the meal for all three of us including the drinks was only $100 AUS or so… it was amazing and the owner was lovely and it was just a great way to chill out for the day.
We went back to find that Stu had been back for ages and thought we'd go drop off the car… poor little red was being returned. We dropped her off there and not in Cancun so unfortunately it meant it cost us $400 extra!! We weren't happy but tried not to let it ruin our holiday. It was silly too cos we were going to Cancun the next day… had we known it we would have paid an extra $50 for an extra day and saved ourselves money and hassle with buses! Idiots! Ah well we'll know for next time. We cruised around the shops for a while then, and ended the night with dinner and a few Coronas in a little pub.
The next morning we awoke early and caught the ferry across to an island called Cozumel where we all hired scooters to drive around on! It's the best way to get around as the taxis are really expensive. So me and Matt got one each and K and Stu shared one. We were so happy that we got them separately too cos me and Matt would have hated to share one! We drove through town.. me getting lots of yells at due to me not thinking and wearing a skirt when I was going to be driving a scooter haha. Heaps of fun though and we found a place on the beach where we could eat and drink and snorkel but not pay to get into. It was great and after watching Kaye and Stu go in to snorkel we decided to as well and all swam out with flippers to see some amazing fish among the coral. Ive only done it a few times and thought I hated it but was surprised to see that I actually really enjoyed it - I think the white sand and clear water helped a little bit! Matt even did well… with his lifejacket on though he had a little bit of trouble diving under the water to see more!
We kept cruising about and stopped at a couple more places and got the bikes back just in time AND without a scratch (which Matt was excited about given his credit card was on file)! Filling them up only took $1AUS so it was a good day!
We had dinner and drinks in town and took the last ferry back after a great day out. It was our last night together so we thought we really had to do something! The rooftop bar was finally open after days of us waiting so we went there and had a couple of drinks. When that closed we went to one up the road where Matt decided it wasn't ok I was tired and got me a red bull and vodka… I don't know what was in that but I was so incredibly sick and couldn't open my eyes all the next day! Went ok that night though so he got what he wanted haha.
The next morning we went back to our bagel shop we had breaky at another day and had our last breakfast together. Me not being able to open my eyes attracted some attention and comments that they hoped my hangover got better! Kaye and Stu left and that left me and Matt to pack and get to Cancun to a resort!!! Something I had never been in and was incredibly excited to see….
