ok so i havent updated this in ages and there is too much to write now!!! it has been impossible lately to find internet so instead i have been taking notes... the best i can do now i think is update what has happened in the past couple of days and that will make it easier for me when i come to writing the blog when i get home, and it also gives you guys an idea of what ive been doing over the past week or so!
Sooo Mexico ROCKS! me and matt have been having the most amazing time since we have gotten here!!!
The first day we flew in we went straight to the Zocolo which matt has shown me now there is one in nearly if not all towns in mexico. they are the town centre really with a park usually in the middle, usually with fountains, and usually with beautiful old buildings surrounding it. i was really surprised when i got to mexico city how developed it is there.. the roads and buildings seem to be quite new which i didnt expect, turns out this is only the case with mexico city but still surprising for me. we stayed that night just outside the zocolo and i ate my first mexican dinner! which i was massively dissapointed about the fact that i didnt recieve corn chips with my meal like everyone said i would haha. in relation to that, it seems the more local the restaurant is, the more likely they will be to give you heaps of food accompaning the actual food you order! say the place we ate lunch at today in Campeche which was UNREAL! called el langostin which means the lobster, and it was right on the water, we got some sols which is our usual these days and we got this stuff called cerveche i think and some other shark filled stuff plus corn chps and lime (the lime you definitely get with EVERYTHING!!!!) and that could have been enough for our meal but then we had ordered parilla mariscos (a grill of shellfish) and another meal of fish which was awesome. hmmm im getting off track.....
so we stayed one night in mexico city which was great to see, we walked around in the morning then caught a bus from pueblo and after eating lunch there, matt getting harassed and getting his boots cleaned which i bought something from maccas so that i could get into the toilets there (much to the laughter of the chick guarding the toilet) and then i ended up getting my boots cleaned too which was sweet cos now they look as good as new for only $8AUS! he saqid it would cost matt $3 so he wasnt as happy as i was haha. after working out where hertz was and trying to explain what we wanted to the rental car company we ended up with this little dodge/h car (we arent quite sure of the make) when we wanted a cool car! they did knock wuite a bit of the price off it though cos we are dropping it in cancun which is actually most of the cost funnily enough.
we drove that night and arrived in veracruz (after our GPS tried to take us 300km out of the way... the thing never fails to send us in the wrong direction... definitely worth the $20AUS we are paying for it haha). so we ended up staying in a sweet hotel right on the water across and near some GREAT restaurants with parking, and it had a pool and probably the best breakfast we have eaten! we have had to stay in double beds though seperately unfortunately cos they seem to think here that matromonial means TINY BED we need to SQUASH into!!! so now we ask for king beds haha. Matt got more sick here than he has been, he hasnt really gotten over his food poisoning yet which was a worry for a while - given though he didnt change his eating or drinking habits though so surprisingly now he is feeling quite a bit better after 3 or so days of eating well.... yes that of course is attributed to him 'probably going to have gotten better anyway' rather than the drastic change in his eating habits!!! :P
so we spent the next day in veracruz - a beautiful little town/port on the water which is still used as such, nothing too much exciting happened here, we lay about trying to get used to the HOT HUMID temp which was hard. tried ALL DAY to find an internet place which we concluded there was none there! swam in the mexican gulf which was sweet but hotter and stickier than i would have a bath at home unfortuantely so no escape from the heat! oh and the guy who was parking matt in the city centre managed to scam money out of us (got more than he should have before we wised up) but also managed to make matt hit the car behind us hehe.... didnt damage anything fortunately!
the next day we got up early and started the drive to villahermosa. things went pretty well... we went off the highway for lunch (i was driving then woohoo!) and we couldnt find ANYTHING acceptable (matt has become more picky since not recovering from the food poisoning) and so we went to a bodega and bought philly (which we found out when in the car was off) the avo was off so we couldnt get that, there was no spanish onion there, i broke the lid off matt's tinned chicken hehe oops... and so i ended up with a chip sandwich (jalepeno chips... abbey you would be so proud!!!) and matt with a tuna and chip sandwich... yep weird but matt liked the texture apparently hehe.
sooo i went ok driving... matt realised how fretting it is sitting in the passenger seat rather than the driving seat!! but i havent driven for long, only so matt could have a nap cos im not actually insured... oops. matt is doing a great job driving too! gets pretty antzy driving in the towns but with the mexicans flying all over the joint, buses coming from everywhere, and so many one way streets you cant tell who is coming from where he is doing a FABULOUS job!
so villahermosa was ok, we managed to get another two bed place to stay... yay not... and went shopping. we went down the main street for a walk which was sweet! heaps of cowboy shops and other crap shops but fun to look at! trying to find a shop with cold drinks though is impossible let me tell you. after this we tried to get a taxi home but impossible so we ended up on this street which turned out great cos it was near the water and it had a big projected screen to watch the costa rica vs mexico soccer game outside!!! great accompanied by nachos, burritos and margaritas! (margaritas for me... matt is still eating and drinking good with water...)
we ended up leaving just before half time... literally 30 seconds before it... and of course that is the time when mexico got their first goal... when we walked PAST the screen! knew it was going to happen but nonetheless it was good to HEAR the massive chearing!
everywhere in mexico too is COVERED in 'live mexico' and 'we love mexico' signs, as well as the flashing lights in the colours and stuff... its amazing how happy and proud they are as a country!
so we slept in this morning and set out for campeche through ciudad del carmen. after being searched by army men with machine guns YES VERY VERY SCARY WHEN WE CANT SPEAK MUCH SPANISH!!! and then over a HUGE bridge which must have been 1km long! we ended up at CD del carmen and ate a wikkid meal with sols galore and great mexican music, on the beach... one of the best times i have had in mexico so far!
we had bought a little oxxo esky too for little red (our car) and had some beers in there which was sweet cos then i could keep drinking while matt was the responsible one!!
we stopped again on the side of the road not car past CD del carmen and swam and had a beer in this random little beachfront... very fun to just stop somewhere where there seems to be noone but there is of course somewhere to get a good beer... never lacking here!
after reaching campeche quite late we found a hotel easily and saw all these weird walls which looked old like a prison that night on the way. the next day after walking around the town (in 35 degree heat... not an easy thing... continually very sweaty and sticky here!) we found out in a vitual tour with audio and really good looking headsets that the entire town was actually in past time almost a fortress with the entire town enclosed in a huge wall to keep the masses of pirates out of there! the stories we heard were amazing and you can still see the entrance to the city with the wall there and walk along it... i have never heard such stories of pirates before with definitions of them and explainations as to who they were and why they were doing it... much better than your average museum i must say!!!
after this we drove through another thunderstorm (our second) where you can bearly see out the front! its crazy cos you can see the thunderstorm and then see the blue sky behind it! definitely not used to this... little red couldnt really take it very well either but matt did a good job!
after thinking we were going to be pulled over by a cop (matt absolutely s*** himself hehe) we drove to merida where our GPS managed to get us close enough to the city centre to be able to find the city centre haha... and we found a good hotel here with a REAL KING BED WOOOHOOOO
a nice guy from the hotel told us about a great little place to get real mexican stuff where you are also supporting the local community who make them out of the real cactus material whic was sweet! we bought a great hammock we can sleep in (both of us, and we can make cuchu cuchu apparently on it haha, he was so happy he gave us a calendar which the hacomic sutra on it so we know how too haha). we then ate in a restaurant which looked great but was more touristy than we initially thought... matt (feeling better now) has managed to drink alot of margaritas and drink enough to feel tipsy woohoo! not usual for our trip.. he hasnt felt well since he got here! and then we watched a maya typical dancing show... lots of fun and so much has happened! all in such a short amount of time!!!
so mexico rocks like i had never thought! the people are great, so nice and happy, the food is amazing! (im definitely going to need to run a bit when i get home!) and drivers are INSANE! the beers are cheap and the driving along a highway listening to matts iphone (no radio in the car) is so so much fun... something which will be in my top memories forever...
lots to come and another holiday almost for the next week - cant wait see kaye and stu and cant wait for the next part of this holiday to begin, its going to be VERY sad to see little red go back to hertz... shes been good to us - i dont want this part of the holiday end im having such an amazing time... at least i still have another week here in the sun, drinking beers, eating corn chips (yes sometimes they come with the meals... more often though bread!) and chilling out with Matt who i am having an amazing time with!
