So what happened after we left Merida? Well before we go into that I have to tell the story about the night in Merida itself after I left off last time. After the show and a couple of drinks I convinced Matt to have a few more drinks with me so we found a little outside café where we ordered random things off the menu which we didn't know what they were. Unfortunately we still don't know what they were… some sort of milky drink and a straight uzo or something which came with a small glass of soda water… they tried explaining to us that we needed to take a sip of each but neither of us was too keen with that and we ordered our standard… strawberry daiquiris. We were munching on the standard corn chips and dip and I mentioned that the chillis weren't too hot… matt had been trying for DAYS to get me to eat the chillis on their own. Stupidly I felt this was the time to show him that I could handle the chillis… a few minutes later (after not one but TWO chillis!) I couldn't breath… after skulling the milky drink and the soda water I had to run inside and explain in Spanish - demasiado picante! (not sure if it was correct but too chilli!) and then dos chillis! And they were all running around telling me not to eat ice but to eat lime which would help. After a little while it helped but matt had a ball taking photos and videos of me not being able to move haha.
Matt also here managed to get some very cheap (in comparison to prices here) Cuban cigars which was great. We ended up going home quite late which Matt hated… I was in a party mood but Matt wasn't too happy staying out till the early hours L we then retreated back to our room where we slept quite well before our early rise the next day.
We got up early then and had a big day of driving ahead of us and a few sights to see before we got to Kaye and Stu and the end of our week long road trip.
We stopped at an Oxxo (our favourite 7 eleven sort of shop) and got some drinks, ice for little oxxo esky and I got a coffee. Little did I realise that the coffee would taste like banana… why? I have NO IDEA! I didn't drink it cos it was too sweet and so was without coffee unfortunately. We then started our drive out of Merida and towards Chichen Itza which we aptly named 'the chicken place' cos we couldn't say it properly. We didn't find petrol on the way out of town but there is always petrol places and we were going to a popular spot so figured we'd find somewhere on the way to 1. Eat breakfast and get me my coffee, and 2. Get the petrol.
So we drove out and I needed to drive for a while cos Matt was so tired from our crazy night out the night before… unfortunately we didn't find anywhere to eat on the way anywhere and ended up going straight to Chichen Itza where it was boiling hot! We'd had the air con on cranked in the car and were not too happy to be doing a tour around where it was humid, hot and sticky and no shade.
We got in and I bought a hat thank god it was so hot that was definitely worthwhile. I tried for a second time to get a coffee, but this time it was so hot that the coffee was making me feel too hot and sticky so I had to throw that one out too! We dodged all the tour guides and went through cos we didn't want a tour… couldn't be bothered listening to anyone. After our Inka Trail experience we were happy to never see another tour guide on the entire trip! Matt did end up going with someone though who kept at us and seemed pretty good. He didn't want much money and was happy with us taking a 'fast tracked 15 minute' tour instead of the standard hour and half or two hour tour! He took us around and showed us some crazy stuff like if you stand in a certain place and clap it echoes off the structures and sounds like an eagle which they used to hunt and message etc. Also the arena where they placed a sport with 13 people I think, each on their own team, the winner gets decapitated (woohoo?!) the losers get to loot the crowd??!! And the royalty eat the winner… weird weird. We saw the sacrificial well, and where they were digging up more ruins. It was pretty amazing stuff. Me and matt were very happy with the tour… but also very happy to be leaving it for the comfort of the car and air conditioning.
We got back into the car and started driving still looking for food. We found a hotel/restaurant although im pretty sure we were the only people there! They had a pool so I got scrambled eggs (only thing on the menu I was comfortable eating!) matt ate a hamburger and we drank Coronas while swimming in the most beautiful and best pool we had seen on the trip so far!
Cooled down, full and refreshed we then again started the drive down the long stretch of road to Playa Del Carmen. In a little while we realised we still had the air con cranking… and down to little to no petrol… AH! We thought there had to be a petrol station nearby and eagerly awaited the next sign telling us when that would be. We figured we had about 20L left of petrol. The next sign said 'Petrol 160km'… ok we'll do a U-turn… then 'next U-turn 60km'AHHHHHHHHHHH we thought we were going to break down and end up in the middle of Mexico heat without petrol ahhhh. So next chance we found we did bush bashing in poor little red and went across the highway in her. Luckily we got to the next petrol station, although Im sure that we were running on fumes by that stage!
After the petrol, a drink and a disgusting 'taco' later we began back in little red with the air con once again blasting.
The rest of the drive was lovely and uneventful. Going into Playa Del Carmen was great and seeing all the resorts on the beach sides was something id never seen before but would get used to in the next week!
