Vancouver Day 3
I get up early and make my way down to Sunset Beach. This is not easy since hundreds of people are running the Lulu Lemon Halfmarathon today, and I have to cross their path twice.
When I reach the kayak rental at the beach, the employees ate not altogether happy about my plan to kayak by myself, since I don't have a sea kayaking certificate. But finally they let me rent a kayak, and I take off down False Creek toward Granville Island. This is an area of heavy traffic: yachts, aqua busses and stand-up paddlers cross my path. The views of the Granville Island market and docked house boats are spectacular - what a place to live, right on the water!
I turn and paddle out toward Stanley Park, and thus more out into the open sea. The wind has picked up and it is quite choppy. I am glad I did rent the kayak early - with these wind conditions I would probably have been unable to! I roll along on the waves for a while, until it is time to return to shore.
In the afternoon I decide that I should finally check out the city itself. I walk across the bridges to and through Granville Island Market, Yaletown, Chinatown, Gastown, and cut through downtown on the way back to the hostel. Somehow I find the city itself not thrilling. Everything is modern, shiny, and sterile. A nondescript metropolis. There are no historic buildings whatsoever. I think I made a good choice by focusing on outdoor activities rather than city sightseeing during my short stay here.
