Vancouver Day 2
After a chat over breakfast, I abandoned my plans for sea kayaking today. Instead I joined a group who was going to hike in the Capilano Canyon area.
This turned out to be a good choice. Tour guide Erik made and maintains most of the trails we hiked. The rainforest was breathtaking. Fallen trees were acting as nurse trees for new ones. Moss was hanging from branches. We passed a 500 year old Douglas fir.
Again, the age of the forest is simply amazing. Interestingly this is in stark contrast to Vancouver itself. The city is less than 200 years old, and appears much newer since most old buildings were torn down in the 1970s. Now shiny glass and aluminum facades dominate. Probably a good place to live, but not very interesting. I am starting to think that the city itself is rather 'so what', at least when you compare it to a place like Montreal. But nature makes more than up for it. I have seen so much wildlife here in just two days - in and around a city with 2.3 million inhabitants!
