Hi from Ella in the cool green hills of Sri Lanka.
We left the King Fern Bungalow early afternoon yesterday & caught the local bus to the nearest train station at Nanu Oya (love that name). By 3.20 pm we were on the luxury train and travelling through (what my map calls) the Strict Natural Reserve. The train passes through Ambewela, Pattipola, Ohiya, Idalgashinna, Haputale, Diyatalawa and Bandarawela to Ella. We arrived at about 6.00 pm.
The train never hits its straps and seems content to amble along at medium pace - which suited us anyway as some of the scenery is pretty terrific. I am also happy to report that the train tracks are straight and true - not at all like the mess between Colombo & Anuradhapura.
We are staying at the Sun Top Guest House on the outskirts of Ella - meaning about 40 metres from Main Street. We rang them at the last minute before leaving Nuwara Eliya, using the local phone I bought in Kandy. This now, in my mind, justifies buying the thing. Yes, I could have bought just a sim-card but my 'phone uses a micro-sim and they just don't stock them it seems.
This Guest House is quite nice - certainly very clean and with good food so that'll do us.
This morning we went for a nice walk up to 'Little Adam's Peak' from where we could have a closer view of Ella Rock (which is famous around here).
On the way back we stopped for Curd & Treacle - yum. We are staying here tonight and Desley just arranged for a further night also - it is nice enough for an extra day/night for sure.
Our Nikon ran out of battery oomph whilst we were at the top of Little Adam's Peak so it's re-charging now, following which I will put up some further pix.
Cheers to all.
