We left Galle at about 11.00 am on the 15th and caught the express air-con bus to Colombo - 500 rupees per seat. A nice new-ish highway between Galle and here so that helped. The bus did not go direct to Colombo though - we must have caught the wrong one in the mayhem at the bus station - it terminated at a suburb about 20 klms from the city. Never mind, it gave us a chance to see a bit more of Colombo. Back in our original Hotel now and the room is better than the previous two but, as it overlooks the street, it is a bit noisy.
Still, last night a bizarre procession went right past the Hotel and we watched it from our Balcony. There was the usual drum beating, horn blowing & fireworks but in addition to a large religous image carried on a truck there were two separate men suspended from truck mounted 'coconut palm jibs' by METAL HOOKS THROUGH THE SKIN ON THEIR BACKS & LEGS! Attendants regularly pushed at them so their bodies swung back & forth. No photo's sorry but we do have videos - which are too large to upload to this Blog.
The main part of the Buddhist Perahera Festival was, we thought, over the previous night but ........ seeing this effort caused us to head to the Gangaramaya Temple for more action - see the photos of some of it. Very glad we went along, despite the crowds.
