We went away for a weekend to Margaret River as everyone we spoke to said that we had to go there. So we hired a car, booked a hotel and had a fab weekend.
We picked our wee car up on the Friday around 5.30pm. It was a silver Toyota Yaris and was an automatic. Thankfully Linda had given us her sat nav as it was a four hour drive south of Perth. I drove down in the dark, wind and rain! Was scary but so easy because of the sat nav. We stopped for some chips on the way and ate them in the car. How bizzare is the driving limit here!!! You change speed constantly and most of the time there are no signs around to tell you what speed to go - hope there are no tickets coming my way! One really good thing about the roads here is that when you are driving on a country road, the road goes into two lanes every ten minutes so that you can overtake all the slow drivers, buses and tractors. How cool!! We arrived at the hotel, checked in and basically went straight to bed as it was quite late.
We got up on the Saturday and went for a wee drive around Dunsborough. We had a look at the beach and around the centre. We then booked a winery tour for the day. How much fun was that!!! We got picked up about 12pm from the lovely Pam and another few people got on the bus. Pam introduced us all and explained where we were from - it was so nice, really personal. We then drove to pick up some others and Pam did the same when they came on the bus. There were eight of us on the tour. Four were Scots and four were Aussie - they were all a good bit older than us though! We had a good laugh on the bus and chatted constantly!
We arrived at the first winery and it was a beautiful place. We were taught how to taste wine properly. Follow the six 's' rule - SEE the wine and look at the colour and texture. SWIRL the wine around in the glass to see the colours and body. SMELL the wine to distinguish the ingredients. SIP it to taste the flavours. SWIRL in your mouth to get a good taste for the wine. SPIT or SWALLOW the wine. It was tempting to just drink it because we felt a little silly at the start. Especially because the rest of the people had obvioulsy been on a lot of winery tours and knew a lot about wine. We got to taste six wines and I ended up buying a bottle because one was amazing. We then went to another three wineries - we had loads of wines and actually feel as though we know a lot about wine now. We also visited a chocolate factory, a cheese factory and a nuts and cereal factory. There were loads of tasters in each place and u could buy stuff too. The cheese factory was ace - I think I ate my body weight in cheese - I was in my element!
Pam the bus driver had made a little platter for us to share at the third winery because she knew that by this stage people were normally drunk. We had cheese, crackers, cucumber sticks, carrot sticks and loads more. The platter was gone in seconds! Everyone was a little tipsy on the way home on the bus and the wee old lady from Scotland was so drunk. She was giggling all the way on the bus and whenever she spoke she said the wrong words - it was hilarious. She had a great time!
We were dropped off around 6pm and we were starving. I went to the pizza place called - 'The Big Fat Pig Pizza' - hee hee and we went back to the room to munch. The weather was pretty bad and the place we were in was so small that we just decided to stay in and watch a movie. I tucked into my bottle of wine - mmmmmmmmmmmmm!
The next day we checked out of the hotel and went on a wee drive. We went to see a few touristy things in the car and then drove home. There was nothing exciting though - not even any nice views to take photos of, but it was great just being in the car and driving through little towns and villages.
I would definitely do a winery tour again - was so much fun!
