It was yet another early start and a short drive to Picton to jump on the ferry. We were not sure if the ferry was going to be leaving today as it was cancelled yesterday due to bad weather and the weather was no better than yesterday - very windy and wet! We checked into the ferry terminal and thankfully the ferry was going to be leaving today. So we just had enough time to head for a pub lunch before starting the 3 hour ferry ride!
The ferry journey was fine to start with, we were drinking and playing cards and all was good. When we got out into the open sea it was a totally different story!!!! The captain warned us that it was going to very rocky and that we should stay in our seats - boy was that an understatement. The ferry was like a dolphin jumping in and out of the water - it was so scary. I tried my best to stay in my seat just like the captain said but guess what.....you were actually getting thrown out of your seat. I was petrified! The four of us just huddled together and hugged - hee hee - it was like that for about an hour! Everyone was so glad to see the harbour approaching as I don't think anyone believed we would make it to Wellington alive! I certainly didn't!
We checked into the hostel and oh my god - it was absolutely gorgeous! We had a four bed dorm with ensuite, there was a lounge with suede sofas, cushions and a massive plasma tv (just like being at the cinema), a games room with a poole table, hammocks, free food - I could go on for hours, it was such a lovely hostel. Unfortunately the weather wasn't as lovely as the hostel and it was around 6pm when we arrived so we thought lets stay in and have a few drinks! We played Monopoly, drinking games and lots of poole. The 'few' drinks turned into many, but a good night was had by all!
We got a long lie the next day - it was amazing. Not slept past 7am for ages! Again the weather was awful and the rain was so heavy that you would be soaked through in about a minute!. We decided to catch up on our washing and took advantage of the iron and ironing board, (totally forgot what they looked like)! We also caught up with emails and went out for tea - nothing exciting really but the weather again made us cancel our plans.
You would think that we would be fuming at the weather since we were having to cancel everything, but to be honest we both didn't mind atall. We are both pretty skint and New Zealand was really an 'extra' for us on our year trip. We have still made it to the places we have wanted to go to and have had a wicked time so far in NZ. I was hoping to detox my body and give it a break from alcohol whilst in NZ but that hasn't quite worked. Do you know what...I don't really care. I'm on holiday and I'm having a great time! Plenty time to detox!
The next day it was an early start to head to 'Napier'.
