We had decided that after having a disappointing time in Galle, it would be best to head along the coast rather than going to Rathnapura, (apparently when it's not raining there, it's hot and humid). We decided on a few more days of recovery on the beach and we picked Mirissa. It is just along the coast from Galle and it has a reputation of being very laid back. It also had the advantage of having good transport links to the hills - our next destination.
We caught the train there - a slow one from Galle that took about an hour followed by a tuk-tuk ride to the beach. The place we had picked to stay at turned out to be a bit basic - right on the beach, very little furniture and cold showers. We then set about finding somewhere else - the only place better was a 'resort' place full of Europeans. Still, we decided to try it.
Verdict is the place is great - beautiful beach, nice walks around it and a great place to do very little The weather is the same as all along this coast - beautiful in the morning then it clouds over early afternoon followed by a tropical storm. The only draw back was the resort insisted on half board and the food was the worst we have had in Sri Lanka - Fran couldn't wait to get back to curries. Still, we have caught up on emails, have read lots of books and have topped up the tan!
