Ken and Judi left to go back today. I don't know who was more unhappy - judi for leaving Unawatuna or Fran with the thought of another week's travel with me. I didn't envy their journey though - a five hour train journey to Colombo & Negembo then ½ a night in a hotel before a 3:30 am flight. We had a 20 minute ride into Galle by tuk-tuk as we were staying in the old part (Fort) of Galle for a couple of days.
We had had a walk round Galle the day before, but on a Sunday evening the place seemed dead. To make matters worse, we stopped for mango juice and brownies (our mid afternoon snack) only to be stuck in the café when the heavens opened. We had an umbrella and decided to run the 200 yds back to the hotel. Before we had gone 20 yds, we were soaked. We took shelter again and but then a kindly tuk-tuk driver took pity There were very few restaurants and only the big hotels serving beer. To make matters worse, there was a power cut just as we went out to dinner. The café we had selected was still open and serving food although some things were off (no blender). Still they could do a mean fish & chips which we ate by torch & candle light.
Next day had a look round town when a few more shops were open - mainly little touristy shops selling all sorts of 'handicrafts'. Fran did a bit of shopping and we then decided we needed to move on - so went to the train station to find the first train out tomorrow. After that Fran had decided she wanted to see the Lighthouse hotel - an expensive place designed by Geoffrey Bawa - a famous Sri Lankan architect. His places are supposed to be different and in harmony with their surroundings. It was 2 km outside of town so we walked - not a good idea as it was a dirty busy road. The hotel itself was different - looked to me like an up market Australian motel but it had a stunning position on the headland with a beautiful pool. We were invited to see one of the rooms which were suitably luxurious.
