We left Tissa to go to Unawatuna - a beach resort 6km from Galle. The waiter in our hotel was from there and said he was going home - he was supposed to be on the 5:30 bus but he missed it so he came with us - s he topped the bus outside the hotel and directed us when we reached Unawatuna. The journey was with one of the worst drivers we have had so far - he nearly wiped out 2 tuk-tuks and a minivan. The route took us along the coast with blue seas and a view of fishermen on poles (unique to Sri Lanka). I was too terrified to look.
When we arrived at the hotel we had booked, we decided it was pokey and not good value so Judi & I set off to look at others. We came back with a good deal at a mini resort hotel up the lane - deluxe rooms and swimming pool complete with breakfast for £35. When we got there, Ken & Fran were impressed but proceeded to moan when they found out that there were superior suites we could have had.- more expensive than the deluxe rooms.
Ken thought he was in heaven - blue skies, blue seas, golden sands and the biggest Jumbo prawns he had ever seen at £7.50 a portion. We did very little for the next few days - walks on the beach, watch sunsets, cocktails on the beach, a quick Ayurvedic massage for Fran - the less said about that the better.
We did manage a quick trip to Galle for a walk round the walls of the fort. As it looked like rain we adjourned to the Galle Fort hotel for afternoon tea - (or in my case carrot cake & iced coffee - very civilised). The hotel itself was an old Dutch mansion beautifully restored. We went up the road to find the hotel Ken had stayed in 30 years ago - that had been turned in to an even more exclusive hotel at $350 a night. We went back to our bargain on the beach.
