The trip over here has gone well. The journey to the airport was uneventful and, apart from the normal delay, the flight over was OK. I was the only one who slept which is why I am still up writing the blog! The plane stopped off in the Maldives which looked picture postcard perfect from the air - little coral islands and an azure blue sea. The ladies view was that we have cocked up already - should have stopped off for a couple of days in some 5* resort on the Maldives - they just don't get the idea of travelling basic do they!!
We emerged from the airport with taxi driver into what seemed like a wall of humid air - the monsoon season is supposed to be over on this coast but it clearly isn't. Arrived at the hotel - right on the beach - nice but consensus is overpriced so we set off up the beach to find some authentic Sri Lankan food (and cheaper beer!). Found a nice little place and after a few beers collapsed back to the hotel just as the rain started. The walk back was in standard formation - Ken striding off in front followed by Judy, trying to keep up, with Fran at the back with her little legs going 12 to the dozen.
We awoke this morning to the sound of torrential rain - apparently it had been raining hard all night. We are in the inter monsoon season which should be relatively dry - but it was coming down in stair rods. We sat down for breakfast not being able to see much through the rain - talking to some cheerful souls that said it rained all last week and is likely to rain all this week. They were off to the Maldives!
Anyway being the intrepid types, we set off with umbrellas as the rain was not quite so intense. We had an interesting walk through the vegetable market and then into the fish market. Lots of large fish - tuna, swordfish as well as the usual snapper, prawns etc. A local insisted that he hold them up to show Ken, like he had caught them himself. By this time the rain had stopped so we then wandered through town - Negombo is a good place to introduce yourself to Sri Lanka - not too busy with very little hassle. The highlight of the walk was seeing a crocodile of prisoners all chained together being taken from the court back to prison. Judging by the number of prisoners, the justice is fairly quick here.
