Today we went to Stevenson College to learn about Scottish Parliament and about its relationship with British Parliament. So Scotland was given the ability to form its own parliament in 1997. The Scottish Parliament is considered to be an "assembly" where the members come together to make decisions. In contrast, in the West Minster Parliament, members sit on either side of the room in opposition.
After the lecture, we went and toured inside the Edinburgh Castle, which was amazing!!! We witnessed the firing of the 1 o'clock cannon, and toured the prisons underneath the castle where there one of the American Revolutionary War soldiers drew a early representation of the American flag. We also saw the crown jewels.
We then ran to the other end of the Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament and were given a facinating tour of it.
By this time we had about 4 pounds left (<$8) between Brian and me because my credit card wasn't accepted there and the ATMs would not take his bank card. The Staytons were gracious enough to lend us some pounds so that we could eat a cheap dinner that night, and lunch and dinner the next day. We found a pub called the Haymarket Pub and we got a wonderfully large traditional Scottish dinner for two for under 6 pounds!!! It consisted of a huge portion of steak pie, gravy, peas, and chips (fries). Oh and I forgot to mention that we tried Mars bars fried in fish batter a few nights ago which was very interesting.
