So we're now in Florence, staying at the Albergo Paola where Clara makes us the most fabulous breakfast we've eaten in months; there's cereal, there's toast, there's eggs and prosciutto, there's yogurt, there's homemade-fresh-from-the-oven cake. Yum!
It's a bit sad that we look forward to our food so much, but Florentine food has been pretty good, especially the Gelati! We have several servings of gelati a day, but we walk it off when we investigate the markets and the shopping malls and we walk through miles of art galleries.
We have investigated both the Nuovo Mercato and the San Lorenzo Mercato several times, both of us coming home with some Florentine leather (bags!) and silk scarves. We made the trip out to The Mall which is full of designer Italian stores. I bought Ferragamo shoes... Mummy don't yell at me, they were a fraction of the price of the Valentino bag i was so tempted by, i saved lots of money this way and i am a verry verrry happy girl right now.
We were advised to reserve tickets to the musuems and galleries, so we've planned our time around the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Galleria del'Accademia. The Uffizi was fantastic for seeing art that i've studied and of course Botticelli's Birth of Venus and La Primavera which are completely entrancing. Today we saw David at the Accademia and he's just amazing. There was a crazy guard lady running around yelling at everybody saying "NO FOTO - NO FOTO" but we still got our sneaky photos in. David is a fabulous image of perfection and we both really loved our hour sitting there entranced.
We went into Santa Maria del Fiore and partied in the 3rd longest nave beside St Pauls in London and St Peters at the Vatican. We oohed and aahed at the pretty candles and the marble and the altar and dome. Today we also climbed the Duomo which was incredible. I am really hoping i come home with extremely toned thighs after climbing to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and today the 493 steps of the Duomo. But the views are worth it and the breeze was welcome after the heat of the city.
We're getting extremely tired of the idiotic americans that surround us. We're trying not to stereotype but so many of them just reinforce their own stupidity. For instance the NY guy the other night who told us that New York is the centre of the world and even the UN is based there. Despite all our efforts to explain that there is indeed an office there it is based in Geneva he was absolutely convinced of NY being the place. He was competing with a californian who said california is the centre of the world and told us the Gnar Gnar is the hottest phrase in the world - it means gnarly and should be phrased as 'that is, like, so totally, gnar gnar like'. Apparently Australia has a king, Kate and I have a twang and Koala's are scary because they have angry eyes. Our favourite comment this week though is most definitely the girl in the market who turned to ask her friend "So like, where is the Leaning Tower of Pisa?" enough said for today.
There are still gardens to be investigated and sunsets to take piccys of and we're heading off to Sienna tomorrow. So we'll post again soon.
