The Cinque Terre is five towns along the Liguria coast of Italy. They are connected by a walking trail along the cliffs and are all painted in fantastic colours. We stayed in the smallest of the towns, Riomaggiore. It is a pretty traditional italian town. On our first night there we were walking down the main street and came across a group of italian nonnas having their evening gossip sessions on the benches outside the little grocery stores. There were always church bells ringing and there was even a little church just outside our apartment. If it wasnt for all the tourists it would have been an authentic italian expeirence.
Having felt unwell for a couple of days melissa and i finally got to start eating pasta and gelati!!!!! very very exciting!!!! Our waiter at the resturant in Riomaggiore was the hottest italian waiter ever - if there were more like him on Lygon street we would probably eat there all the time.
We achieved the walk between three of the five towns which was magnificent, you are right along the cliffs looking over the water, with the brightly coloured towns in the background. We stopped in all of the towns and had fantastic truffle pasta in Monterosso.
Melissa is making me mention the shiny sand at Monterosso - it had sparkles.
On our last day in the cinque terre we decided to take a day trip to Pisa. We went and climbed the leaning tower. It really does lean. I mean really, you can feel it as you are climbing up it messes with your sense of balance. It is spectacular from the top of the tower - all the people below look like tiny little ants (with backpacks and cameras of course). The steps at the top of the tower are so narrow that i think they should have a width restriction - like at theme parks if you are under this height kind of thing- it should be 'if you are wider than this you cannot ride the leaning tower'. Some of the touristis we saw would have really struggled.
The best dumb American quote we heard this week came from a girl who asked her friend 'Where is the leaning tower of Pisa?', her friend thought about it and then replied '...pisa?' Melissa and i almost fell over with laughter.
