We were up bright and early this morning at 6:30am for our Funyak tour. The bus picked us up from a nearby bus stop and we ate our pre-bought bakery treats whilst waiting for the bus.
We were driven out to nearby Glenorchy which is actually a very cute little country town. From there we were issued wetsuits, fleeces and life jackets and herded onto jetboats. The jetboats took us on an hour trip up the Dart River and the driver attempted to scare us a few times with some 360 turns and by pretending to run into things. The jetboat was fun but I'm glad it was only a relatively short trip, not a whole day. The scenery along the Dart River was beautiful! Lots of snow capped mountains and green hills.
We were dropped off by the jetboat to our funyaks. Funyaks are basically blow up kayaks. After being split into groups we received a quick lesson from our guide, Ben, and then got into our funyaks. It was two to a funyak so Mel and I got to go together. At first we really struggled. Mel was captain and steering at the back but we didn't work real well as a team at first and got left behind the rest of our group. Eventually we started to get better at it and we able to maneuver ourselves through the river.
After an hour or so of funyakking we stopped for lunch which was sandwiches and fruit. The view from the lunch stop was really beautiful and it was nice and warm in the sun.
Straight after lunch we funyakked into a narrow cove between steep cliffs. The water was a beautiful bright blue and some people had a go of jumping into the water from the cliffs. I was tempted to do it, but the water was so cold so I chickened out.
We emerged from the cave and then continued on down the main river, after a captain change. I think I did pretty good as captain but the ride back was a lot smoother. After another hour or so we finished off our funyakking trip.
Some buses took us back to Glenorchy through a place called Paradise. Paradise is a pretty country town with lots of green hills and is surrounded by tall mountains. A few films such as LOTR, The Hobbit and Wolverine were filmed there. After we arrived back in Glenorchy we were dropped back off at our hotel were we had long showers and a rest before dinner.
Around 8pm we walked into town for dinner. We went to a place called Speights which is a brewery slash restaurant. I had black cherry chicken and it was absolutely delicious. We have decided that if we don't find anything else we like the look of we'll go back there another night. Nom mom nom.
During dinner it started to rain but we managed to find a break in the clouds to race down to an Irish pub. It was semi crowded in there. We stayed for a few drinks but decided to leave when the live music stopped and after some guys called Mel hardwork and me highly strung.
We headed over to the Ballarat after that and had a few more drinks and a quick dance. There was a DJ there tonight as opposed to a live band so the crowd was heaps younger. Hopefully they have a live band on New Years because I'd definitely prefer that. We got back to the hotel around 1:30am.
