This morning we had our normal breakfast of pastries and coffee before strolling across to the Hiroshima Peace Park. First stop was the museum where we spent a few hours walking around and reading all about the nuclear bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945. It was a very eye opening experience and it was particularly shocking to hear that there are still countries creating and stockpiling nuclear weapons. USA even admitted in 1994 that they had tested the effects of nuclear weapons on humans. We both bought a book on the bombing and then heading out into the park.
It was lightly snowing basically all day and it felt like we were walking around in a snow globe.
There were many memorials throughout the park including one for Sadaka Sasaki who was a young girl who contracted leukemia from exposure to the black rain that fell after the bomb hit.
We made our way across the bridge which replaced the bridge that was the target for the bomb dropping and ended at the A-bomb Domb. The A-bomb Domb was located almost directly underneath where the bomb exploded and as such is still standing. The council and community decided to leave it up rather than demolish it to have it as a sign of peace and remembrance of that day.
After the Peace Park we went over to Hiroshima Castle. As the original castle was destroyed with the bombing they had rebuilt a replica which was quite modern inside with museum like displays.
We filled up on Japanese curry for lunch before heading back to the hostel to wash some clothes.
For dinner we had a Hiroshima speciality called okonomiyaki. It's a mix between a pizza and a savoury pancake and I, in particular, thought it was delicious. Mine had soba noodles through it whereas Shannon's just had cabbage so mine was much tastier. Nom nom nom.
To work off our dinner we played some games at the arcade and then took a street car back to the hostel.
