Hi there everybody. Apologies for my complete tardiness in updating my journal.
Since I last wrote, we spent 6 weeks living back in Sydney, working. Now I use the term 'work' rather loosely. I got my old job back at the pub - boss must have liked me ;-) and spent much of my time supping tea and eating chocolate. Happy Days.
I was treated to an amazing weekend at the Hunter Valley Wine region, stopping in top class accommodation, eating the best food and generally having a fantastic time with aforementioned boss.
Also managed to make it to Palm Beach - the setting for Home and Away which was good to see. I'm sad to report that there were no celebrity encounters.
It was also in Sydney where I learned that I had become an aunty - congratulations to Daniel and Sarah on the birth of Oliver James!
So after 6 weeks, we flew over to the West Coast. I was a little disturbed on arrival as our hostel in Perth was more than a bit reminiscent of the hostel in the film 'Hostel.' We were greeted by some European saying 'Oh, so you're the new girls?' before being shown to our basement room fully equipped with hook on ceiling and dark alley outside of window. However, this is all part of living the dream!
For the following two weeks we hired a campervan, along with our friend, Steve, to travel up and down the coast. I did my (almost) fair share of driving, even managing to negotioate various obstacles including kangaroos and emus. I also reversed the thing, although failed to ever park it between two lines.
We saw some great scenery and had more than a few laughs, despite the cold evenings. To be fair, it is winter, and we were still walking round in shorts and t-shirts in the day.
One day, Leah and I went on a snorkelling trip on the reef. We were warned of sharks and prayed we didn't see one. Of course we did. So our instinct? We swam towards the bloody big thing as it was swimming away from us. We also saw a massive ray - didn't swim towards that - memories of Steve Irwin still too fresh! In the sea were also turtles and dugongs (seacows), which were great to see.
So here endeth our Australian adventure, stayed a lot longer than anticipated and definitely got more than I bargained for. However, I loved every minute of it, it is a fab, relaxed and lovely country and I will no doubt be back!
Tomorrow we fly to Singapore to start the Asian leg of our tour. Not sure what to expect there and really excited to see some new things. Hand sanitiser already packed so I guess I'm ready to go!
Hope everyone is well, keep those mails coming! Miss you greatly, Katherine xxx
