Got up early today for our flight from Darwin to Maningrida where I will be teaching for the next 3 weeks. We flew on a small plane which was scary, arrived at a place literally surrounded by red dirt.. I cannot explain the nerves I was feeling walking off the plane. We were picked up by the principle who drove us in the school bus which felt extremely luxurious given our surroundings.. we stopped off at the 'top shop' one of 2 supermarkets in the community. I cannot believe I am in Australia still.. It feels like a totally different country altogether. Sick looking dogs everywhere, a very strong smell of b.o, its just crazy. little kids (like toddlers) walking around by themselves, my head and my nerves were going crazy trying to take it all in. Once we had brought some food to last us the wkd (which was crazy expensive) we went to the school and got given our rooms which are on the school grounds, tiny rooms with a bunk bed and a desk which are all within a big shipping container, we share a kitchen with a bunch of other teachers/staff who are also living in the same rooms and things as us. Spent the arvo watching the kids play footy on the oval next to our rooms, ventured out of the school grounds which are all fenced off - hung out with some kids, kicked the footy and did a cartwheel (havent done one in ages and it was awesome!) .. spent the night laughing with the 6 girls and the guy running the program - they are awesome fun!
