Had breakfast at bed and breakfast and then had a driver take us to Nowa Huta, a huge residential area and steel factory built by the Communists in the early 1950s and to Schindler's factory, which is now a museum.
The steel plant is still in operation and the housing development is still used. They were built for people from rural areas who were moved here in the 1950s. We saw just the chimneys of the plant and blocks and blocks of identical apartment buildings, public squares, a socialist cafe left just as it was in the 1950s, and a church shaped like a boat that caused lots of controversy because the Communists had not intended to include a church in the new community.
We didn't realize Shindler's factory has been turned into a very large museum about Krakow during the German occupation -- life of Poles during that time and the story of the liquidation of the Jewish ghetto. Lots of multimedia, photos, etc. Shindler's office was preserved just as it was. We had to rush through the last part of the museum, but it was quite interesting.
Then we returned to our bed and breakfast and walked around for a while before dinner. We sampled some vodka at a small cafe/bar and then went back to the restaurant where we ate the first night here. We had a great herring dish and a confit goose leg served with plums and red cabbge. We walked back to our bed and breakfast and packed for our trip to Budapest tomorrow.
