We had breakfast in Poland (at our b & b), lunch in Slovakia, and dinner in Hungary. Aaron, our driver, picked us up about 9:30 and drove us to Budapest. He owns the transfer company so spent a fair amount of time talking on the phone and texting to arrange for other business. We were a little disturbed that he was doing this on curvy mountain roads as he nearly tailgated numerous large vehicles -- but, he was clearly an experienced driver so the drive was safe. We drove through lots of Polish villages, small Slovakian towns, and then a short distance in Hungary. We stopped for lunch in a traditional Slovakian restaurant and had cabbage soup with sausage and potatoes. The trip took longer than planned because of traffic, a disabled truck, and another truck that had tipped over onto its side.
But, the most bizarre incident, and definitely out best travel story ever, occurred as we were nearing our hotel in Budapest. It became apparent that police had blocked off the major street that would take us to our hotel. We couldn't figure out why until someone texted Aaron to tell him the whole neighborhood had been evacuated because a WORLD WAR II BOMB had been discovered. Apparently, this isn't unusual here, but it certainly is for us.
Aaron parked the car and walked with us to see if the police would let us walk to our hotel, but they wouldn't. So, we retreated to a Vietnamese restaurant, had coffee, and waited for about 15 minutes until the evacuation ended and then walked a few more blocks to our hotel.
This hotel is the fanciest one so far. A very large corner room with black and gold decor. The hotel has a nice restaurant where we had dinner this evening. We did walk to see the Danube before dinner and have a tour of the city in the morning.
And, apparently, the bomb was safely removed.
