Lee woke up feeling terrible -- seems like some sort of novovirus (sp?) so stayed in bed most of the day. I got up early and went to look for the shoe holocaust memorial. Along a short section of the Danube embankment, close to the Hungarian Parliament, there's a collection of shoes (real shoes that have been preserved) representing the people who were lined up and shot by the river because the Hungarian Nazis killed so many people during the last year of WWII. There's no sign, just the array of shoes -- a very moving memorial. I walked back to the hotel and had breakfast alone and then got Lee some sprite and sort of a gatorade drink. Then I walked to Liberty Square and to the area of the Parliament buildings. I discovered a statue of Ronald Reagan and a very moving memorial to Imre Nagy, the Communist government head who was executed because he supported the 1956 Revolution against the Communists. There's a life-sized statue of him walking across a bridge, having turned from the past and looking toward the future. I had to wait to take a photo, because there were lots of people getting their photos taken standing beside the statue on the bridge. Then I walked around the Parliament buildings, which are undergoing reconstruction, and back through Liberty Square. I found the American Embassy and a statue of an American general, who saved the Hungarian Museum from being looted by Romanian soldiers in 1919. Then I went to St. Stephen's Basilica and bought tickets for a concert this evening, bought some gifts and returned to the hotel. Lee was still feeling poorly. I went out for lunch at a cafe on the walking street and did a little more shopping. I can back and packed and then we walked over to the concert -- organ and soprano -- great sound in the large cathedral. We returned to the hotel. I got Lee some crackers and he seems to feel somewhat better. I had dinner at the hotel -- the waiters and waitresses were so kind, as they have seen us together these past days. I settled out bill and dread the 3:30 wake up call.
