Rain rain and more rain! My first day here and it's pouring and freezing cold - what to do? Go back to bed! After a good sleep-in Rachel and I decided to go for a walk around the city. First thing I notice food, food and more food - everything imaginable. We visited a typical breakfast vendor and tried some deep fried snacks. Next we made our way to a local market where I tried flower jelly, 3 different types of Tofu, strange Chinese dumplings, pink pork, rice and root crop cakes and preserved eggs. A sense overload so many different tastes and flavours I am going to like this country. For lunch I brought some fried fish and a salad and Rachel went for some soup and fried fish chunks. In the afternoon we relaxed as at 7pm we are heading to a bouldering gym to do some rock climbing! We headed to the bouldering gym where I met Vicky a local and Matt an expat school teacher from Australia. They were both very good at climbing and taught me a lot, not only was it physically demanding but mentally challenging trying to figure out different routes. I really enjoyed it and pushed myself, another thing I noticed is the teamwork needed where to place hands, legs and helping one another out. The whole area is padded so when you fall you are cushioned to some degree. After 2 hours we were all tired so we went and got a couple of U-bikes and bicycled to a favorite resteraunt of Matt's. it was nice to ride the city at night and with no rain. We had local prawns, fried oyster, beef and vegetable, fried rice, green veg, chicken chilli and nut and a Mae Son soup - amazing meal with lots of different flavours - worst thing was trying to use the dam chopsticks. We enjoyed some really good stories about travel, culture and Taiwan and it is becoming very apparent why so many expats choose to call Taiwan home. It is definitely more expensive then most Asian countries but it does have very good infrastructure and services. After dinner we bicycled back to Rachel's house and called it a night!
