Waking up in a dorm room is something I haven't had to experience in quiet a long time. I got up early for the free breakfast which consisted of strawberry jam, bread, cake, tea, coffee and orange juice - nothing fancy but not bad for a free breakfast. As it was super early I decided to go back to bed for a few hours but unfortunately some of the other people in the room had other ideas and sat outside the room talking very loudly. It's strange seeing hostel etiquette again and it dissapoints me people can't show the most basic of ettiquette: doing your dishes, sharing amenities, respect for others when sleeping hours and developing a sense of community. On another note the hostel is well staffed and has great facilities and I will have no problem hanging out here a while. Cris had decided to sleep a lot today so I decided to go visit the islands of Lake Titicaca. I walked down to the wharf and as it was Sunday got to see the weekend market in full swing. I managed to book a local boat over to Uros that they crammed full of locals and tourists alike. The journey over to the islands only took 30 minutes and the scenery was breathtaking - amazing to think this lake is 3900 meters above sea level. We arrived at the community of Uros - the floating islands which are basically built on quill (dirt and roots) and reeds. It was quite impressive but unfortunately very touristy; each island only about 50 meters long and a replica of the next - designed specifically for tourist visits. Our tour guide luckily spoke a little English and was able to add a few English words in his Spanish explanation of Lake Titicaca. After a long talk came the speech of your money supports this community so buy buy our handicrafts. The next part of the tour on the little dragon boats turned out to be extra (something we were not told) so I politely declined along with two other tourists, picked a nice viewpoint and enjoyed the scenery. Really wondering where the hell the toilets are on these islands? I did however manage to sneak around behind one of the huts and have a piss without getting spotted - Winning. After an hour or so wait we headed to another very touristy island where there was nothing really to do then shop so most people got on the boat and waited for our trip back. The trip back was slow but comfortable and I think the half day excursion was plenty of time. In the afternoon I checked out the Sunday markets, brought some vegetables and headed back to the hostel. Cris arrived back at same time and turns out she had gone to Uros to - the night before she had planned to sleep all day and then do an overnight stay but had changed her mind after waking up. The rest of the afternoon we sat around drinking coca tea as Cris was feeling sick from the altitude and I was just warn out! I cooked up a massive mince stew to give myself something to do then sat in the common room chatting with a Dutch and Portuguese girl about plans in Peru.
