Today I had nothing really planned and wasn't sure if I would head North to Ecuador or South to Trujillo. As it was Sunday I thought it would be a good idea to checkout the local markets and my god what chaos, people, kids, chickens, cars - pushing, bumping yelling complete chaos but organized chaos. My aim was to find Raisens - usually an expensive treat in this country, after a bit of searching I found cheap Raisens and brought 1/4 kg only to 5 minutes later find even cheaper so I had to buy another half kilo. The food in this market is so cheap you wouldn't believe - 10 cents an avocado, $1.50 1kg of Raisens, $4 1kg of nuts, lollies, chocolates, pastries and cakes 10 cents. I get the urge to buy everything but I know I have limited time and certainly limited space. I also decided to call the hostel in Huaraz that I had been sending emails to and got a somewhat promising response - they said I was overqualified for position but they would love to have me however they have a volunteer coming in few days and they only have room for one - however they hadn't heard from this volunteer so there is a slight chance I might get an opportunity. The girl I talked to sent me an email with all the info and the job sounds really good - I am now thinking I will head to this town and try my luck as there are a few places asking for volunteers. After lunch I went and found the bus stops of buses heading to Huaraz - a big journey of about 17 hours but nothing I havnt done 10 times this month. It is such a nice day in Piura I then headed to a city park to sit in the sun and enjoy the scenery. Whilst I was sitting enjoying the sun 4 students came up to me and wanted to interview me, the problem being they could speak no English - very awkwardly they shoved a video camera in my face and asked me questions in Spanish. I struggled to understand my interviewers but did my best to answer, I found the whole thing quite hilarious arghh and it gave me something to do and write about. On the way back to my accommodation I wondered around the market and brought a few things for dinner. As I was walking through the market I heard my bag zipper unzip and I turned to find a guy trying to unzip my bag - I confronted him and amazingly he pretended like he didn't do anything, I yelled at him and followed him and in the end created a bit of a scene - probably a bad idea as he was bigger then me, mean looking and no one could understand what I was yelling about. A good wake-up call for me, I was walking around too confident here and I realized I don't even no the Spanish word for help or thief, once again highlighting the importance of learning this language. In the evening I made a Peruvian salad from all the fresh ingredients I had found at the market: tomatoes, avocado, papaya, olives, hams, sausages and dried meats. Still not exactly sure if I will leave here tommorow but if I do I will be heading back south to the beach town of Trujillo.
