Mitla & Hierve del Agua Tour!! Today I was feeling much better thankfully and ready for my tour to the ruins, Mezcal factory and petrified waterfalls. The tour was to start at 10am but no surprise we had to wait around for late-comers and some small issues. The first stop was about 20 minutes out of town and was the famous tree of Tulee; said to be the biggest tree in the world with a diameter of 48m. The next stop was Tetapin a village famous for textiles and weavers. I have seen a number of these little towns now and witnessed the weaving 100s of times so nothing really new to report. Half an hour down the road we came to the town of Mitla and its well preserved 1000 year old palace. We had an english speaking guide here which was nice and the palace was quite beautiful. As expected we then stopped at an expensive buffet style resteraunt and with no other food options around most people were forced to pay up; I on the other hand had brought and eaten some tortillas with avocado earlier. Where we had lunch was also the Mezcal distillery and we were given a very brief tour and explanation of how they make the Mezcal. Next was sampling time and we got to try aged, young, Flavoured and creamed versions of the companies Mezcal; all of which were delicious. Our last stop of the day was Hierve el agua and the petrified waterfalls which took another hour of driving along some terrible roads. It was more then worth it with the waterfall certainly being the highlight of the day - complete with some beautiful rock pools and beautiful views of the surrounding valley. The place was packed with tourists and a lot of people were swimming in the natural pools but as the sun was going down and the wind freezing cold; I decided against swimming. The ride back to Oaxaca was freezing cold and incredibly long with bad traffic most of the way. By the time we arrived back it was time for dinner so I went in search of something unique for more last supper in the food capital of Oaxaca. In the end I splurged (about $3.50) on the very typical Black Mole chicken casserole with black beans, salad and tortillas.
