The heat is really starting to get to me up here on the Caribbean Coast and today I woke in a pool of sweat. The good thing though is my stomach has settled and I am starting to feel a little better. This morning Khris and I caught a bus to downtown where we went to the fruit and vegetable market - quiet a dangerous place I have been told and I could see Khris was very uncomfortable here so we brought a few things and got out. I really wanted to find avocado at a reasonable price and after a few laps I picked up 4 avocados for just over a dollar! The markets were crazy and there were thousands of people everywhere, but I didn't feel unsafe but the locals insisted it was not safe for a gringo like me here. We continued walking around downtown visiting a mobile phone outlet, some souvenir markets and a nice old chapel. Interesting thing about Barranquilla is that is only 100 years old making it a very new city - newer then most cities in Australia - however not maintained and the amount of derelict and ruined buildings is mind blowing not to mention the horrific state of the roads. Laws are very strict here and people are punished here severely for petty crimes - still there seems to be plenty of crime. We headed back to Khris's for lunch and then we joined her Dad who was off to the south part of the city to visit his sun. On the drive out I saw something that I guess best represented what Khris had been saying about dangerous people in this city: 2 men were arguing from either side of the road at one another when one man all of a sudden pulled out a machete (huge sword like knife) and ran across the road swinging it at the other man, I didn't see the end result but I imagine it wasn't pretty and this was in broad daylight on a busy highway - unbelievable. We hung out at Khris's step brothers house for the rest of the day which was quite uneventful - it was actually quite odd we were sat down infront of tv with 7 year old brother and did nothing really else. In the evening we headed back to Khris's had another yoga session followed by a cook-up of mince and guacamole my new goto dinner. Tomorrow we are off hiking so its off to bed early tonight!
